Kampala , Uganda | police officer attached to the security detail of Anita Among has been arrested following a shooting incident that left a female motorist injured along Mackinnon Road in Kampala.
The suspect, identified as Corporal Humphrey Muhanguzi, is currently in custody as investigations intensify into the circumstances surrounding the use of a firearm in a high-security zone.
Incident Details
According to preliminary police reports, the incident occurred around midday when the victim-whose identity has not yet been publicly disclosed-was driving a Toyota Harrier (registration number UBQ 038A) near the Speaker’s residence.
Authorities say the officer allegedly confronted the driver, leading to a confrontation that escalated into gunfire. The woman sustained injuries and was rushed to a medical facility for treatment. Her condition has not been officially confirmed.
Initial accounts suggest the shooting may have been triggered by a misunderstanding or failure to comply with security instructions in the heavily guarded area, although this remains under investigation.
Official Response
Parliament spokesperson Chris Obore confirmed the incident and noted that early findings point to an altercation between the officer and the motorist before the weapon was discharged.
The Speaker’s office clarified that Among was not present at the residence at the time of the shooting and has called for a swift, transparent inquiry into the matter.
Police spokespersons have also confirmed that the suspect will be interrogated as part of ongoing investigations aimed at establishing whether rules of engagement and standard operating procedures were followed.
Broader Concerns
The shooting has once again raised public concern over the conduct of armed security personnel, particularly in urban areas and around VIP installations. Similar incidents in recent years have sparked debate about accountability and the proportional use of force by officers on protective duty.
Authorities say a full report will be released once investigations are complete, including findings on what exactly led to the confrontation and subsequent shooting.
