Police Hunt Security Guard Over Shs 290M, Suspected Gold Theft in Kamwokya

Kampala, Uganda  》April 14, 2026
Police in Kampala have launched an intensive manhunt for a private security guard accused of orchestrating a high-value theft involving cash and suspected gold in Kamwokya, a city suburb.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the suspect-identified as Justin Akena-was attached to Magnum Security and had been deployed to guard a vehicle at the time of the incident.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Akena allegedly broke into the very vehicle he had been assigned to protect and made off with more than Shs 290 million in cash, along with a quantity of gold believed to be of significant value. The exact amount and authenticity of the gold are still under verification by authorities.

Owoyesigyire revealed that the theft was discovered after the vehicle owner reported suspicious activity and missing valuables, prompting an immediate police response. By the time officers arrived at the scene, Akena had already fled, sparking a citywide search.

“This was a breach of trust involving a security officer entrusted with safeguarding property. We are actively pursuing the suspect and urge members of the public to assist with any information that could lead to his arrest,” Owoyesigyire said.

Police have since intensified operations in and around Kamwokya and neighboring areas, while also coordinating with private security firms to track the suspect’s movements. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and gathering witness statements to piece together Akena’s escape route and possible accomplices.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the vetting and supervision of private security personnel, particularly those assigned to guard high-value assets.

Authorities say they are working closely with Magnum Security to obtain employment records and background information on the suspect.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any sightings or relevant information to the nearest police station as efforts to apprehend the suspect continue.
The case remains under active investigation.
