Kampala, UgandaPolice in Kampala have arrested a private security guard in connection with the theft of gold and cash worth hundreds of millions of shillings in an incident that occurred earlier this month.

The suspect, identified as Akena Justine, was attached to Magnum Security Company and had been deployed to guard premises belonging to Goldex Uganda Limited along Mawanda Road at the time of the incident.

According to police, the case stems from a theft reported on April 10, 2026, involving property belonging to Katuramu Maggie. Akena is accused of stealing a bag from a motor vehicle, which contained:
UGX 29 million in cash
900 grams of gold, estimated to be worth UGX 500 million
Authorities say the guard allegedly took advantage of his position at the facility before disappearing shortly after the incident.

Suspect Went into Hiding
Preliminary investigations indicate that after the theft, the suspect locked up the premises and fled, prompting a manhunt by security agencies.
Police tracked Akena to Gaspa Village in Bweyale Town Council, where he had reportedly been hiding.

The arrest was carried out on April 15 at 10:30PM, when officers apprehended the suspect at a retail shop he is believed to have recently opened.
During interrogation, Akena reportedly confessed to the crime, with investigators revealing that part of the stolen money had been used to establish the business.

Detention and Ongoing Investigations
Akena is currently being held at Mawanda Road Police Station as detectives finalize investigations. Authorities say efforts are ongoing to recover the stolen items and trace any possible accomplices.
Police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, confirmed the arrest and said the suspect will soon be formally charged in court.

“Investigations are ongoing, and the suspect will be prosecuted upon completion of the case file,” he stated.
Rising Concerns
The incident has raised fresh concerns about internal security breaches, particularly involving private security personnel entrusted with protecting high-value assets.
Police have urged companies handling valuable commodities such as gold to strengthen internal controls and surveillance systems to prevent similar incidents.
More updates will follow as the case develops.
