GULU CITY,UGANDA | The Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang, has officially presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Pece AFCON Training Facility in Gulu City, marking a significant milestone in Uganda’s preparations to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The event, held in Pece Division, attracted local leaders, sports officials, and community members, all witnessing what government officials described as a transformative investment in northern Uganda’s sports infrastructure. The facility is among several key projects being rolled out across the country as Uganda, alongside Kenya and Tanzania, gears up to co-host Africa Cup of Nations 2027.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ogwang emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that Uganda meets international standards required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). He noted that the Pece Training Facility will not only serve as a training ground for teams during AFCON but will also provide long-term benefits for talent development and sports excellence in the region.
“This project is a clear demonstration of government’s dedication to sports development and regional inclusion. Northern Uganda will play a crucial role in AFCON 2027, and this facility will help nurture future stars while boosting the local economy,” Ogwang said.
The Pece AFCON Training Facility is expected to include modern pitches, training amenities, accommodation infrastructure, and other supporting facilities designed to meet CAF requirements. Officials say the project will also create employment opportunities for local residents during both the construction and operational phases.
Leaders in Gulu City welcomed the development, describing it as a long-overdue investment that will elevate the region’s status on the national and continental sports map. They expressed optimism that the facility will inspire youth participation in sports while contributing to social and economic growth.
Uganda’s successful bid to co-host AFCON 2027 has triggered a wave of infrastructure upgrades across the country, including stadium renovations, transport networks, and hospitality facilities. The Pece project is part of a broader national strategy aimed at ensuring the country is fully prepared to host one of Africa’s most prestigious football tournaments.
Construction works are expected to commence immediately, with authorities pledging timely completion in line with CAF deadlines.
