Kalaki,Uganda | KALAKI-Former Woman Member of Parliament candidate for Kalaki District, Monica Asako, has called on journalists to adapt to the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI), warning that the technology is rapidly reshaping the media landscape and cannot be ignored.

Speaking during celebrations to mark World Press Freedom Day, Asako stressed that resisting AI would only leave media practitioners behind, urging them instead to harness its potential while remaining vigilant about its risks.

She told journalists that AI is no longer a distant concept but an active force already influencing how news is gathered, processed, and disseminated.
“Artificial intelligence is not a threat we can wish away-it is a reality we must confront.

Journalists need to equip themselves with the skills to use it effectively while safeguarding the integrity of their profession,” she said.

Asako acknowledged growing anxiety within the media fraternity, noting that some reporters fear being replaced by automated systems. However, she emphasized that such fears should drive innovation rather than retreat.

According to her, the future of journalism lies in blending traditional reporting skills with modern digital tools, including AI, data analysis, and multimedia storytelling.

She further encouraged journalists to remain grounded in ethical principles, cautioning that while AI can enhance efficiency, it also presents challenges such as misinformation, bias, and loss of human editorial judgment if misused.

Beyond technology, Asako underscored the importance of unity and resource mobilization among media practitioners. She advised members of the Kumam Media Network to strengthen collaboration and explore creative fundraising strategies to improve their working conditions.

Among the proposals she suggested was organizing social events such as fundraising dinners to raise money for essential equipment and operational support.

The event, attended by members of the Kumam Media Network, was held under the theme: “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security.”
Participants used the occasion to reflect on the role of journalism in advancing democracy, promoting accountability, and safeguarding human rights.

The gathering also served as a platform to renew commitment to defending press freedom, particularly in communities where media practitioners continue to face economic and professional challenges.

As discussions concluded, journalists reiterated the need to evolve with changing times while preserving the core values of truth, accuracy, and public service that define the profession.
