Kampala,Uganda |The Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) has announced the promotion of 4,996 junior officers across various ranks in a move aimed at strengthening service delivery and enhancing professionalism within the institution.
According to an official press release issued on Tuesday, the promotions were approved by the 36th Prisons Council and effected by the Commissioner General. The promotions span multiple ranks, from Warder/Wardress to Principal Officer levels, reflecting one of the largest internal advancements in recent years.
The newly promoted officers have been distributed across ranks as follows:
- 139 officers promoted to Principal Officer I (PO I)
- 196 officers promoted to Principal Officer II (PO II)
- 201 officers promoted to Chief Warder/Wardress I
- 204 officers promoted to Chief Warder/Wardress II
- 432 officers promoted to Chief Warder/Wardress III
- 1,512 officers promoted to Sergeant Warder/Wardress
- 633 officers promoted to Corporal Warder/Wardress
- 1,679 officers promoted to Lance Corporal Warder/Wardress
The Commissioner General praised the officers for their dedication, discipline, and commitment to duty, noting that their efforts have not gone unnoticed. He urged the promoted personnel to uphold high standards of professionalism and continue striving for excellence in their responsibilities.
The UPS clarified that the promotions were based on available vacancies within the established prisons structure. Officers who were not considered in this round will have opportunities in future promotion cycles.
The statement was signed by Frank Baine Mayanja, the Senior Commissioner of Prisons and spokesperson for the service.
This large-scale promotion is expected to boost morale among prison officers and improve operational efficiency within Uganda’s correctional system, as the institution continues its reforms and modernization efforts.
