NRM Rallies Kikuube Leaders Ahead of Crucial LC5 By-Election

POLITICS ,KIKUUBE

Kikuube District, Uganda|The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has convened a high-level expanded district conference in Kikuube District as part of efforts to unify party structures and strengthen its strategy ahead of the upcoming LC5 chairperson by-election.

The by-election was triggered by the death of former district chairperson Peter Banura Araali, who had been serving as the NRM flag bearer at the time of his passing. His death left a leadership vacuum in the oil-rich district, setting the stage for a politically significant contest that the ruling party is keen to retain.

Massive Turnout of Grassroots Leadership
Speaking to journalists shortly before the meeting commenced on Tuesday, NRM Director for Mobilisation Rosemary Sseninde revealed that the conference attracted over 500 leaders drawn from across the district.

The attendees included:
Village-level NRM chairpersons
LCIII chairpersons
District executives
Councillors-elect
Influential opinion leaders
Security representatives
Dr. Sseninde emphasized that the gathering was not merely procedural but strategic, aimed at aligning all party structures from the grassroots to the district level.

“This meeting is about harmonising our position, ensuring unity, and building a strong front as we prepare for the LC5 by-election,” she said.
Focus on Unity and Discipline
Party officials stressed that internal cohesion would be key to securing victory in the forthcoming election. With multiple interests often emerging during by-election processes, the NRM leadership is working to prevent divisions that could weaken its support base.

Sources within the meeting indicated that discussions were centered on:
Consensus-building around potential candidates
Strengthening mobilisation structures
Reinforcing party discipline
Addressing local governance concerns raised by residents
Strategic Importance of Kikuube
Kikuube District holds growing political and economic significance due to its proximity to Uganda’s oil development projects in the Albertine region. Analysts note that maintaining political control in the district is critical for the NRM, both symbolically and strategically.

The LC5 chairperson position plays a central role in coordinating district development, overseeing service delivery, and linking local governance structures with the central government.
Road to the By-Election
While the Electoral Commission is yet to announce the official polling date, political activity in the district is already intensifying. The NRM’s early mobilisation signals its intention to consolidate support and avoid the kind of fragmentation that can arise during competitive by-elections.

Observers say the outcome of the Kikuube LC5 race will serve as a key indicator of the ruling party’s grassroots strength and organisational coherence ahead of future national political contests.

As the conference continues, party leaders are expected to outline a clear roadmap for candidate selection and campaign coordination, setting the tone for what is shaping up to be a closely watched local election.
