Otuke East, Uganda |Residents of Otuke East Constituency are set to benefit from improved access to safe and clean water following the launch of a new borehole drilling initiative spearheaded by area Member of Parliament, Julius Acon Bua.
The project, which has already commenced, involves the construction of four new boreholes across selected communities in Otuke District, with an additional unit being drilled in neighboring Alebtong District. This intervention forms part of the legislator’s broader commitment to address persistent water shortages that have long affected households in the area.

For years, many communities in Otuke have relied on unsafe water sources, exposing residents to waterborne diseases and long trekking distances in search of clean water. Local leaders and residents have welcomed the development, describing it as a timely response to a critical need.
Speaking about the initiative, Acon Bua emphasized that access to safe water remains a top priority for his constituency. He noted that the ongoing works are part of his campaign pledge to ensure the construction of at least ten boreholes, aimed at significantly reducing water stress in underserved villages.
“This is about restoring dignity and improving health for our people. Safe water should not be a luxury,” he said, adding that more sites have already been identified for future drilling phases.

Beyond water access, the MP is also championing livelihood improvement programs targeting rural households. He has intensified mobilization efforts to attract support from partners and well-wishers both within the Lango sub-region and in the diaspora, particularly in Australia and the United States.
Through these partnerships, plans are underway to distribute agricultural inputs, including quality seeds, as well as goats to vulnerable families. The initiative is expected to boost household incomes, improve nutrition, and strengthen resilience among smallholder farmers.

Community members have expressed optimism that the combined efforts in water access and economic empowerment will bring lasting transformation to the region.
Local authorities have pledged to work closely with the MP’s office to ensure proper management and sustainability of the boreholes, including the formation of water user committees to oversee maintenance.
As the projects progress, leaders say the focus will remain on expanding coverage and ensuring that even the most remote communities are reached, marking a significant step toward improving living conditions in Otuke East and beyond.
