Kampala,UgandaThe Uganda Prisons Service announced plans to pass out 1,238 newly trained recruit warders and wardresses in a significant ceremony slated for Friday, April 17, 2026, marking a major milestone in efforts to strengthen Uganda’s correctional system.

According to an official press release issued on April 15, the pass-out ceremony will be held at the Maroons Grounds located within the Luzira Prisons Complex, beginning at exactly 8:00 a.m. The event is expected to attract senior government officials, security leaders, and invited guests from across the country.

The ceremony will be presided over by the Vice President of Uganda, who will attend as the Chief Guest. Her presence underscores the importance government attaches to the role of correctional services in maintaining national stability, security, and justice.

The 1,238 recruits have undergone months of intensive training designed to equip them with both practical and theoretical skills required in modern prison management. Their training is understood to have covered key areas such as security procedures, human rights standards, inmate rehabilitation, discipline, and emergency response. The inclusion of wardresses reflects continued efforts to ensure gender balance and improve the handling of female inmates within the prison system.

Officials say the deployment of the new officers is expected to ease staffing gaps across various prison facilities, improve inmate supervision, and enhance rehabilitation programs aimed at transforming offenders into productive members of society. The Uganda Prisons Service has in recent years emphasized rehabilitation and reintegration as central pillars of its mandate, alongside custodial responsibilities.

The pass-out also comes at a time when Uganda continues to implement reforms within the justice and law enforcement sectors, with a focus on professionalism, efficiency, and respect for human rights. Increasing the number of trained personnel is seen as a critical step toward addressing congestion challenges in prisons and improving overall service delivery.

Authorities have clarified that attendance at the ceremony will be strictly by invitation, in line with security and organizational arrangements for the high-profile event.

The announcement was signed by Frank Baine Mayanja, Senior Commissioner of Prisons in charge of Cooperation and Corporate Affairs, who also serves as the Service spokesperson.
