Fibroids Raise Fresh Health Concerns Following Death of MP Nakimuli

Kampala ||Uganda |Passing of Member of Parliament Nakimuli has sparked renewed concern over the dangers posed by uterine fibroids, a condition often overlooked despite affecting many women.

According to family members, the legislator had been preparing to undergo surgery to remove fibroids prior to the recent general elections. However, the procedure was delayed after doctors discovered blood clots, prompting an urgent operation on her legs instead.

Speaking during funeral proceedings, her sister, Irene Nakimuli, revealed that the fibroid removal surgery was eventually carried out. She noted that the family had seen the extracted growths, confirming that the procedure had taken place. Despite this, uncertainty remains over what complications followed the operation.
“We saw the fibroids that had been removed, but what we do not understand is what happened afterward that led to her death. We need a clear medical explanation,” Irene told mourners.

Medical experts describe Uterine fibroids as non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus. While often harmless, they can lead to severe complications such as excessive bleeding, anemia, pain, and in some cases, life-threatening conditions if not managed properly.

Health professionals emphasize that delayed treatment, underlying conditions like blood clots, or complications during surgery can significantly increase risks. In Nakimuli’s case, the presence of clots prior to surgery may have complicated her medical situation.

The incident has ignited calls for increased awareness, early diagnosis, and improved access to specialized care for women suffering from fibroids. Advocates argue that many women endure symptoms in silence due to stigma, lack of information, or limited healthcare access.

Fibroids remain one of the leading gynecological conditions among women in Uganda and across Africa, yet public awareness remains low.

As the nation mourns MP Nakimuli, her death is now being seen as a wake-up call for both the public and health authorities to prioritize women’s reproductive health and ensure timely, safe medical interventions.
