1,238 Uganda Prisons Recruits Pass Out After Nine Months of Intensive Training.

KAMPALA, UGANDA17/04/2026 -A total of 1,238 prison recruits have successfully completed their basic training and officially passed out, marking a significant boost to the manpower of the Uganda Prisons Service. The pass-out ceremony was held at the Luzira Prisons Training School, following over nine months of rigorous preparation.

The cohort comprises 912 male and 326 female recruits, reflecting continued efforts by the service to promote gender inclusion while strengthening institutional capacity.

The recruits began their training on July 12, 2025, undergoing nine months and two weeks of intensive instruction at Luzira Prisons Complex. The program covered a wide range of disciplines designed to equip officers with both practical and professional skills required in modern correctional service.

Training areas included:

Prison management and administration

Security and surveillance operations

Human rights and inmate welfare

Physical fitness and discipline

Emergency response and crisis handling

Officials noted that the training curriculum is continuously updated to align with international correctional standards, emphasizing rehabilitation, professionalism, and respect for human dignity.

The passing out of the recruits comes at a time when the Uganda Prisons Service is seeking to enhance efficiency, reduce congestion challenges, and improve inmate rehabilitation programs across the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, senior prison authorities highlighted that the new officers will play a critical role in:

Maintaining law and order within correctional facilities

Supporting rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates

Expanding service delivery in newly established and existing prison units

The leadership also commended the recruits for their resilience and discipline throughout the demanding training period, urging them to uphold integrity and professionalism in their service.

The notable presence of 326 female recruits underscores ongoing efforts to ensure gender balance within the force. Authorities emphasized that women officers are increasingly taking on key roles in prison management, particularly in handling female inmates and contributing to reforms within the correctional system.

Following the ceremony, the newly passed-out officers are expected to be deployed across various prison facilities nationwide, where they will immediately begin active duty.

The Uganda Prisons Service reiterated its commitment to continuous training and capacity building as part of broader reforms aimed at transforming correctional services into a more humane, secure, and rehabilitative system.
